Moberly Regional Medical Center Receives Stroke Center Accreditation

MOBERLY, Mo., September 3, 2024 – Moberly Regional Medical Center has been re-accredited by the Missouri Time Critical Diagnosis System as a Level 3 Stroke Center in recognition of the hospital’s commitment to following national standards for quality stroke care. Level 3 centers play an important role in providing access to time-critical care.
“Our team at Moberly Regional Medical Center works diligently to deliver quality care and follow best practices in stroke care,” said Michael Hall, MRMC chief executive officer. “This is accomplished through continued improvements in quality and clinical practices by many different healthcare professionals in our facility. Additionally, the physicians and staff involved in the stroke care program have specialized education and training.
According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, stroke is the sixth leading cause of death in Missouri. Approximately 795,000 people in the United States experience a new or recurrent stroke every year – one every 40 seconds. Stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term disability, and there are over 7 million stroke survivors in the United States.
“At MRMC, patients receive care using national standards regarding diagnosis, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation, with the ultimate goal of reducing the time between stroke onset and treatment,” says Gale Osgood, MRMC medical director of emergency services. “Minimizing the time from symptom onset to treatment has been shown to be safer and preserve more cells in the brain, which can equate to improved function after a stroke. Individuals who are having a stroke and receive treatment within specific time frames from when their symptoms began are more likely to recover and less likely to have permanent disabilities.”
According to the American Stroke Association, warning signs of a stroke include: sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body; sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding; sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes; sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination; and sudden, severe headache with no known cause.
“If someone is showing the signs of a stroke, our stroke team will implement our stroke protocols, which are designed to assess and confirm a stroke,” said Vicki White, MRMC chief nursing officer. “We will then begin treatment timely. We continuously perform stroke drills, educate our staff, and maintain all required certifications.”
