Moberly Regional Medical Center Receives Stroke Center Accreditation

Moberly Regional Medical Center has been recognized by the Missouri Time Critical Diagnosis System as a Level 3 Stroke Center, in recognition of the hospital’s commitment to the highest standards in the country for stroke care. Level 3 centers play an important role in providing access to time critical care.

Stroke is the nation’s fourth leading cause of death. Each year, about 795,000 people experience a new or recurrent stroke – one every 40 seconds. Stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States, with about 4.7 million stroke survivors alive today.

“Moberly Regional Medical Center is committed to making our stroke care program the best it can be – and this means working with physicians for ongoing improvements in quality and clinical practices, and investing the latest tools, techniques and innovations,” says CEO, Brent Parsons. “The staff who are involved in the stroke process have specialized stroke education and training. When the people who live and work in Moberly and the surrounding areas think about superior stroke intervention, we want them to think of MRMC.”

“At MRMC, patients can be assured of certain standards regarding diagnosis, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation, with the ultimate goal of reducing the time between stroke onset and treatment,” says Gale Osgood, MD. “Minimizing the time from symptom onset to treatment has been shown to be safer and preserve more neurons (cells in the brain), which equates to improved functional ability after a stroke. Individuals who are having a stroke and receive treatment within specific time frames from when their symptoms began are much more likely to recover and less likely to have permanent disabilities” Osgood said.

Patsy Lewellen, Chief Nursing Officer at MRMC said “We worked very hard to receive this certification. If someone is showing the signs of a stroke, our Stroke Team will implement our Stroke Protocols, which are designed to assess and confirm a stroke. Then we will begin treatment in the shortest time possible. We continuously perform stroke drills, educate our staff, and maintain all required certifications to ensure when an individual with a stroke comes to MRMC, they will receive effective and efficient care. Also important to remember is if you ever experience sudden symptoms that could be a medical emergency, don’t be afraid to seek emergency care. According to the American Stroke Association, warning signs of a stroke include: sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body; sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding; sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes; sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination; and sudden, severe headache with no known cause.
