What to Know About Surgery During the Pandemic
3/10/2021
MOBERLY, Mo., March 10, 2021 – The thought of having surgery for a nagging injury or lingering pain can make some patients feel uneasy. But, as many experts have said over the last few months, it is extremely important not to neglect medical needs during the pandemic.
Patients can feel confident seeking the medical care they need at Moberly Regional Medical Center. Numerous steps have been put in place to keep patients safe during their visits, including:
- Screening all visitors for COVID-19 exposure and symptoms before they are allowed to enter.
- Visitor restrictions reduce the number of people inside to enable social distancing and keep patients and employees safe.
- Facemasks are worn by everyone inside the hospital—patients, employees and physicians.
- Caregivers are using appropriate personal protective equipment and washing hands before and after caring for every patient.
- Cleaning protocols have been enhanced with extra measures and increased frequency, including disinfection of frequently touched surfaces and all patient care areas.
- Furniture in waiting areas arranged to support social distancing.
“In most cases, lingering injuries or pain do not go away if they are not addressed,” said Dr. Craig McCoy, board-certified OB/GYN and URO/GYN. “Significant health issues can develop very quickly if care is delayed. Moberly Regional Medical Center has precautions in place to treat all patients requiring care.”
Pre-surgery COVID-19 testing is required for symptomatic patients or if ordered by a physician. Patients are asked to self-quarantine after receiving the test and before arriving at the hospital. Pre-op patients will be screened in the pre-op assessment. All patients must adhere to the universal masking policy, social distancing, and good hand hygiene.
“The patients who have put off procedures because of the pandemic have felt very good about the measures being taken at MRMC,” Dr. McCoy said. “We work closely with the patients and their families to answer any questions or address any concerns prior to and after their procedure.”
Two visitors are allowed per patient (with the exception of the emergency room, which only allows one). Everyone entering the building will still be screened at the entrances and visitors will not be permitted into the building if they are experiencing any symptoms of COVID 19.
At Moberly Regional Medical Center, we provide surgical care, advanced technology and knowledgeable and experienced surgeons. Surgery services offered include bronchoscopy, GI endoscopy, general surgery (abdominal, gallbladder, appendectomy, etc.), gynecology/obstetric, ophthalmology, orthopedic, ENT, podiatry, robotic surgery, and urology.
The surgeons at Moberly Regional Medical Center perform minimally invasive procedures when possible. By using miniature cameras with microscopes, tiny fiber-optic flashlights and high-definition monitors, surgeons can perform surgery through small incisions that take only a few stitches to close. Minimally invasive procedures may result in less blood loss, less pain and a quicker recovery.
