Celebrating Non-Scale Victories
A 2024 Gallup poll found that 55% of Americans said they would like to lose weight, though only about half are seriously working toward that goal.
We understand that making changes is challenging, but there are various ways to measure your progress when it comes to getting healthier.
In fact, as many as 44% of people told their primary care physician they don’t own a scale. Instead, many non-scale owners say they gauge their progress through statistics on their smartwatches or by how much their mood improves.
However, if you do own a scale, it can be easy to fixate on the numbers. And while a scale can be a tool to measure progress, it’s essential to remember that it’s not the end-all and be-all. So, don’t let it overshadow the incredible, hard work you’re doing to improve your health.
Celebrate non-scale victories and give yourself the credit you deserve when you notice your:
- Clothes fit better. If the scale hasn’t moved at all, that may be because you lost inches but gained muscle from your workouts. So, rather than dropping pounds, your clothes might feel looser. And doesn’t it feel incredible to get back into your favorite outfits with confidence?
- Energy increases. Even if the number on the scale doesn’t drop, you might notice that it doesn’t take a gallon of coffee to get moving anymore. You’re not as tired when you climb the stairs or chase your kids around. In fact, studies suggest losing as little as 5% of your body weight can improve energy, mood and sleep.
- Exercise seems easier. Establishing a consistent exercise routine isn't always easy, but once you do, you might notice a decrease in your heart rate, reduced joint pain, improved flexibility and better balance. You also can lift heavier weights or complete more reps than before. So, despite the numbers on the scale, that means you’re getting stronger!
- Sleep improves. After you start a new exercise regimen and diet, you might find yourself falling asleep faster, experiencing fewer wake-ups or feeling more rested. And as we all know, a good night’s sleep makes all the other parts of our lives better, too. That victory also might be the perfect excuse to buy a new set of pajamas!
So, don’t forget to step off the scale once in a while. Every victory, no matter how small, contributes to a healthier, happier you.
